The Colorfill Process
Colorfill is a process which engraved areas are filled with color to enhance appearance. This process can be used on any material that can be engraved. For example wood, glass, ceramic, etc.
A common method is also to screen print an image and then deboss it into vinyl.
The engraving process can be varied in approach. Examples of engraving processes include laser engraving, CNC cutting and hand engraving. The type of print material, for example paint, will need to be specifically matched to the type of material used for your product. This is required to provide longevity to your product.
You can use the colorfill process on any product that can be engraved. Typical products which include pens, mugs, plaques, glass recognition awards, signs, etc. You can vary the depth of the engraving to create different contrasts. For some product materials the process is easier than others. For example wood is easily painted.
Special stained glass paints can be used to paint on glass that are fired into the glass. You can also use not designed for glass. Some consideration for painting glass are:
Put waterproofing on the glass.
Use special primer just for glass.
Use two coats.
Mix the paint with a little bit of same color dye.
Evenly paint about 3 to 6 coats, making sure the paint on the one layer dries before painting over it.
You don't have to limit the colorfill only to paint. For wood products it is possible to engrave your artwork. The engraved portion can then be scorched to provide the contrast. Clear glass can be engraved to provide a visual difference. This process can give you a dramatic effect and make the artwork stand out.
